Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise
New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using such medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
